Bicyclist Bill of Rights

Bike Writers CollectiveA new Los Angeles group, The Bike Writers Collective, aims to lay down a basic foundation of cyclists rights with their Bicyclist Bill of Rights

WHEREAS, cyclists have the right to ride the streets of our communities and this right is formally articulated in the California Vehicle Code; and

WHEREAS, cyclists are considered to be the “indicator species” of a healthy community; and

WHEREAS, cyclists are both environmental and traffic congestion solutions; and

WHEREAS, cyclists are, first and foremost, people – with all of the rights and privileges that come from being members of this great society; and

NOW, THEREFORE, WE THE CYCLING COMMUNITY, do hereby claim the following rights

  • …Cyclists have the right to be free from taxation, registration, compulsion to wear helmets, and any other law that may be seen by a reasonable person as an attempt to restrict their freedom to ride.

  • …Cyclists have the right not to be surveilled by electronic means either remotely or by any interactive device affixed to or implanted in the machine or rider.

  • alright l.a. cyclists!! it’s good to see us getting some virtual ink. i have nothing but respect and admiration for the writer’s collective and i look forward to supporting them in our cause.

  • I just forwarded a copy of that bill of rights to our county planning department director to see if we might get our board of county commisioners to sign off on that proclamation publicly in support of cyclists’ rights. Every little bit helps.

  • …Cyclists have to right not to use cycle ‘facilities’ if, in their opinion, they are dangerous and/or unsuitable for their needs. No law shall be made compelling cyclists to use any of the aforementioned facilites.
