Bern Helmets Carbon Fiber Watts

bern_carbon Bern helmets makes multi-sport and bicycle specific helmets and multiple impact hardhats with their own unique style. All models share a hard shell and the same basic shape that drops down to lend extra coverage to the back of the head while keeping the overall form factor fairly slim to avoid the mushroom-head look. Shown is the latest model, the carbon-shelled Watts with integrated visor, fresh back from testing where it passed all bike safety standards. Weight savings in a helmet is something you can definitely notice, and this one promises to shave some off of the 18oz standard version. Look for a review of Bern helmets in the coming weeks as we get some more ride time in on the pair of lids we just received – so far so good.

  • Well, at long last! Now we can get a helmet that doesn’t look like a kid’s RickyRacer-type helmet! It actually has a little bit of attitude!

    Cool…

  • Cool, I really wanted to get a Bern Brentwood helmet but was afraid it would be hot in the summer, so went with the typical vented bike style. Looking forward to you review.

  • looks extremely well ventilated!

  • It looks very sharp, but back in the day the old bell v-1 pro was 15 oz. and everyone said that was way too heavy. Now 18 oz. is acceptable?

  • Bern makes a quality helmet, but for cycling use I felt they were just too heavy. But at 18oz with a carbon shell I would go for it. With a basically solid full shell and interior padding it would be tough to get it any lighter. This one even looks kinda bitchin’. Would be great for urban trips but I’d still go with a regular lighter cycling lid for longer road trips. Now what will they price this at?

  • “…this one promises to shave some off of the 18oz standard version.” so the helmet is lighter than 18oz

  • yeah, they look rad, but will they save yer sweet little noggin’ in a crash. According to this post by backcountry.com’s gear guru, Bern does not certify their helmets: http://thegoat.backcountry.com/2009/04/16/the-bern-the-bern-helmets-going-carbon/

  • Bern makes both helmets and hardhats in identical forms. Helmets have EPS foam and are good for impact and meet CPSC helmet certifications. Hardhats have multi-impact foam and do not meet the certification and are more like skate helmets.

Directly form Bern’s site: “EPS hard form meets ASTM F 2040 and EN 1077B standard for snow and ski, CPSC and EN 1078 standard for bike and skate. Hard Hats with Brock soft foam do not meet the standards for action sport head protection.”

actually guys, the helmet shown is an EPS fully certified helmet, CPSC rated for bike, ASTM 2040 for snow. Sorry to burst everyones bubble that bern onlymakes soft foam hard hats, we also make fully certified bike helmets. this will be available in the carbon fiber EPS cert form, or the HARDHAT(tm) brock foam. Yes, we also made a new EPS mold, and the fit, is better than anything EPS out there, check it out for yourself. Also check the new copy of Urban Velo, it is sick! You know BC.com should be on this tip mang! urbanites are driving bike son!

thanks Brad, sorry for the correction!
