Beats and Bikes

Beats and Bikes from Theo Kim on Vimeo.

This video features really nice camera work, and nobody likes a bike thief. But I can’t help feeling bad for the antagonist at the end of this short film… What are your thoughts?

  • As a victim of bike theft, I found pleasure in the “closure” at the end of the vid.

  • That’s what bicycle thieves deserve! Cool video.

  • do people wear their chrome shoes without the zipper all the way up? really?

  • please tell me that this wasn’t actually approved by anyone at chrome

  • confused — you feel bad for the thief? i’m not with you on that one.

not just a thief, but arrogant, confrontational and bragging about it to people on the train?

naw, i’m about as pacifist as they come and i didn’t feel too badly for him getting a crescent wrench to the body. he’s lucky it wasn’t to his skull.

  • Even though it sucks to have a bike stolen, valuing a bike over the life of a human is just fucked up. If it is okay to beat someone down for stealing a bike, is it also okay beat them down for stealing a toaster? Who gets to draw the line?

We do have a crime problem in the city but we need to get more creative with non-violent crime prevention and punishment… not less creative (violence). Bring back the stockade!!!

Last thought: if we go down the road of mob justice we will very quickly break society in to pieces too small to support the economic tits that we all love to suck on.

  • Beating someone unconscious and ’till their body twitches for stealing a bicycle is a bit ridiculous. In my opinion, that makes one worse than the bike thief. Perhaps the beaters need beat.

By the way, that advertisement would make me less likely to buy anything from the advertiser, not more likely. Promoting violence is stupid.

And in case you are wondering, yes, I have had bicycles stolen from me.

  • It may be worth pointing out that if the owner of the bike had locked it up, it would not have been grabbed so easily. That said, this is certainly a schadenfreudally amusing fantasy.

  • I really can’t condone beating someone within an inch of his life for stealing a bicycle. Yes, he’s a criminal. Yes, he deserves to be punished. But he didn’t hurt anyone. He did not touch or threaten harm upon his victim. It’s a petty crime. Reacting to a nonviolent crime with violence only makes us as a whole look like savages. You shouldn’t take pleasure in beating a criminal with a wrench. It starts with that, then it moves onto walking around with a wrench looking for criminals to beat…

  • I think people are reading too much into this, imo it’s meant to be funny the way an old Tom and Jerry cartoon would be, not, “Hey! Beat down bike thief’s.”

  • I’m with Bowser. Where was all this outrage when Wile E Coyote was getting exploded within an inch of his life. Not cool roadrunner, not cool.

  • I am really glad at the wealth of indignation in these comments. Violence only begets violence. Stealing a bike is definitively uncool, but so is beating someone – for any reason.

  • bullshit hyper-masculine posturing. this makes bike culture look privileged and moronic, no matter how serious it’s intended. makes me feel shitty about the chrome products i own.

  • Sneak thieves who get caught have to take the heat for all the ones that get away. It’s very unfair, so I think any sneak thief who gets beat up should complain and demand justice, and not blame me if they get beat up all over again.

  • I’d be more open to considering Chrome products if they toned down their macho / hipster image a bit. This endorsement takes that a bit over the top, in my opinion. Maybe it sells them products, but you don’t see that with Bailey Works, Mission Workshop, Ortlieb, etc.

  • After seeing the video I shot off a quick email to Chrome to get to the bottom of the whole deal. Here’s my email and their response;

Comment: http://vimeo.com/32694655 Can someone tell me if this was officially supported by Chrome in any way? I’m a huge Chrome fan and I’ve enjoyed plenty of your products over the last six years and it would make me really bummed to find out that someone at Chrome has OKed this. I applauded you guys when you’ve done charitable things like donating shoes and I’ve recommended your brand to family and friends both because of these actions and the quality of your product but if there is going to be a continuing relationship between Chrome and proponents of savage vigilante justice then I’m going to have to start second-guessing my praise. Thank you and I hope to hear from you soon.

    Terence,

I’m sorry that you saw that and thought that was sponsored by us in some way. We are getting in contact with those individuals and asking them to remove our logo from that video. It was in no way sanctioned or sponsored by us as a company or as individuals.

    Thanks for all your support!

    Cheers,

  • Wow guys. You guys are reading into this a lil’ too much. There’s bigger things to be worried about, like theft in the neighbourhood and nobody doing nothing about it. This is supposed to be ENTERTAINMENT. There’s no blood, you don’t see the thief getting hit. It paints a picture. Getting caught as a thief is NOT a positive thing so is stealing. Where I’m from you get your hand cut off as a thief. Not saying I condoned it but that’s the way things are. People deal with stuff in their own way. What if the guys were wearing Puma shoes? Would you stop buying Puma’s? Nike has a million child salves that make their shoes. You gonna stop buying Nikes? Look at what Coke feeds you through a can, you gonna stop buying Coke? Get real people, it’s a 2 min video, shot brilliantly, scored awesome, and a good cast of good people that made a dope video. That’s where it ends. It’s not supposed to offend Chrome, Base Urban, or anybody supporting these brands.

  • Only thing “RAD” noticed is the zipper not done up. Ahahahah! Wow, I love these comments.

  • Thanks for posting the vid, great shots and music. Im a bit surprise at the comments…is a video as I see it , discouraging people from stelling bikes….not promoting random bettings. C’mon. I think peeps are reading waaaaayyyyyyy too much into it. Im sure no one was hurt during the filming of the video. I think they are way more important things to worry about now days then if this less then 2 min vid promotes violence or if a brand is used to hurt people. Really?
I love my chrome shoes and bag…and nowhere in their packaging says “please ware with caution or you may end up hurting a bike thief” Or my baseball bat packaging ” please dont used to crush skulls like dani devito did in the movie Casino” c’mon lets use common sense here.
The bikes on the vid look dope, so its the riding scenes, so is the camera work…
Chrome make shoes and bags for bike riders,..and they are kick as at that..they dont make guns, bullets, etc..c’mon lets use common sense

  • They used to hang horse thieves too, you know.

It’s pretty serious to be stealing a man’s means of transportation.

  • As far as I’m concerned, news papers have more tragedies than a 2min video about an arrogant, cocky, thief getting caught by guys who had to chase him through the city and finally catching up to him. Imagine someone stole the only thing that sets you free of all things. I remember Doug and I at Niagara Falls enjoying our vacation. We rented bikes that day. I was taking a photo of the scenery when I heard:

” LINDA!!!!! THAT GUY IS STEALING OUR BIKE!! ”

We had a tandem bike. He was furious and looked green like the Hulk. Then he said:

” IF I CATCH THIS GUY, I’M GONNA BEAT HIM FOR STEALING THAT BIKE. ”

So, this its home. If this was animated, it wouldn’t be dissected like it is being.

I am Linda, and I like this video.
