Helmets can't prevent damage due to the brain bouncing around in the skull, because they don't absorb enough impact force. That's what causes concussions and damage to blood vessels. A hematoma can escape detection in an initial CT scan, then become critical weeks later. It happened to me once.

Bike helmets are hugely overpromoted to the point that helmet use has become the main focus of discussion of any accident .

Argh! Why'd I read the comments to CBS article? I expend a lot of energy looking for the good in people and things, and then a dozen folks make mean comments about the life's work of a deceased person. Comments to the article announcing his death! I'm guessing some of his friends and relatives will read article and then the comments-hoping to find condolences and other comforting words. Jeesh!

Anyway, thanks for doing the work you do. I enjoy your posts every day!

I wonder if that quote regarding the helmet was made during the initial accident, not after his death. It would make more sense that the publicist was optimistic about a recovery and cited the helmet use as a hopeful sign of recovery.

If not, I agree with the author and think the helmet comment seems odd and out of place.

Thank you for pointing this out!!!

When I first read the news earlier today from another source, the whole wording of the article seemed misleading to me. From the title ((it makes it sound like he died in an actual bike-crash)), to the non-chalant mention of the helmet. They could have maybe used this opportunity to point out that one needs to be cautios/observant after a serious bike accident, etc....

Oh well...
