2012 Steel Road Bikes

You asked for it, so here it is. The completely unofficial, absolutely incomplete list of 2012 steel road bikes and frames. Cooler than carbon, better than bamboo, al…al…neater than aluminum, steel is where it’s at for neo-luddites, custom junkies, homeless wanderers and, well, just about any cyclist who craves something simple, timeless and repairable. Please, do some of the footwork for us and add your own suggestions in the comment section.

I’ve always liked the frames from Marinoni, such as the singlespeed Strada

yeah…i think for some of these brands there are multiple bikes that could be listed.

Salsa, Surly and Rivendell are examples where they have more than 1 line of steel road bikes.

i own a Rivendell Hillborne and have used it both for touring and for just riding around town.

Is schwinn still really a notable company? I ask this in all seriousness, I have not really heard anything about them since they got bought out.

I believe the 2012 specialized allez is steel

  19. BillJanuary 31, 2012 at 2:24 am

Jamis has a steel line as well besides the Eclipse. Coda, Quest, Sputnik etc

  20. BillJanuary 31, 2012 at 2:30 am

At least this site recognizes that steel bikes exist. I’m sick of the LBS telling me “They don’t sell. We have a great carbon frame that would suit you” BS! To each his/her own. Let me ride my steel bike and you ride yours whatever it is, enough.

I mainly regarded steel has hi-ten. Cro-mo is a kind of steel, but I would call it cro-mo, not steel.

I recently picked up a Raleigh Grand Prix excellent bike for the money. However, look for the 2011 vs 2012. The components on the 2011 are better Tiagra vs. Sora. Also, you can still find 2011 Raleigh Record Ace and the comps are better than the 2012 Ultegra vs 105.
