Multipurpose Overland Mover Convertible Trailer

Trailers to do real hauling are getting more and more popular, meaning there are more heads thinking of different ways to do things. Bike designer Len Rubin has introduced a Kickstarter project to create the M.O.M trailer, or multipurpose overland mover trailer. The trailer is convertible and morphs to carry different loads through a plug-in design of add-ons. Check out a few different images of M.O.M.’s configurations—trailer, shopping cart, even stored flat.

Splinter Bike on NPR

From NPR:

Michael Thompson, a carpenter in Norfolk, England, claimed that he could build anything out of wood. Even a bicycle.

He boasted to a cyclist friend that he could build a bike that was 100-percent wood. “He just laughed at me and said, ‘I tell you what, if you build it, I will ride it,’” Thompson says.

He calls his creation the Splinter Bike, and true to Thompson’s word, there are no metal parts — not even a chain.

Grove Street Bicycles 27.2 Wedge Pivotal Post

Grove Street Bicycles out of Jersey City NJ has just produced the pictures 27.2mm Wedge Pivotal Post in conjunction with Animal Bikes. The design comes from BMX and allows one to run this post without a seatclamp, securing it only with the bolt integrated into the Pivotal head. Granted, it is only compatible with Pivotal style saddles (or some traditional railed saddles with a conversion piece by S&M Bikes) and comes in only one diameter and length, 27.2mm x 260mm for $30. The post holds tight much like an older quill stem does, meaning that before using in your frame you should make sure that the 27.2mm seatpost diameter is constant the length of the seattube, as many bikes are butted further down the seattube with only a few inches at the top at the quoted size.

Urban Outfitters Classic Wood Bike Basket

One of our regular readers just sent us a link to this Urban Outfitters Classic Crate Wood Bike Basket. But he wasn’t overwhelmed by the beautiful design—he was shocked and dismayed. Because in Cole Bates’ estimation, Urban Outfitters has copied his original design, the Bates Crates Custom Porter Crates.

To add insult to injury, Bates claims that Urban Outfitters had previously contacted him about selling his crates, but determined that his wholesale price was too high. Cole is not the only one accusing Urban Outfitters of such offenses recently.

It will be interesting to see what effect, if any, the coverage on popular websites like The Huffington Post, The Washington Post, Regretsy and CBS News will bring about, even as Urban Outfitters categorically denies the allegations on their blog.

Velocolors Valve Caps

Valve caps aren’t usually something to write home about, and in fact most people find they lose them and never think about them again. Kids and kids at heart love colored ones however, and Velocolors now offers both Presta and Schrader caps in 8 colors for about $2.50 per 4-pack. Inspired by his daughters interest in the standard red caps on his bike, Bob Lang looked around and couldn’t find any other colors available and decided to order up batches of his own. The Schrader ones even have a gasket in them to help keep your air where you want it since the cap on a Schrader tube is actually functional and for more than just decoration.

Physics of the Riderless Bike

Science Friday posted this short video that adds a lot to the discussion of exactly how a bike remains upright by building a zero-trail, gyroscopically neutral bike that retains the self-steering attributes of a conventional riderless bike.

Bicyclist Dies After Crashing Through Store Window

The Chicago Tribune reported about a tragic death yesterday, one of those freak accidents on two wheels that lurks in the back of my head sometimes. Our thoughts are with the family.

A 52-year-old Oak Lawn bicyclist died Tuesday after he lost control of his bicycle and crashed through a large store-front window in the south suburb, officials said.

Racky was riding his bicycle east on 95th Street when he crossed LaCrosse Avenue at about 1:17 p.m., hit a curb and fell into a 7-foot-square plate glass window, which shattered, Oak Lawn police said.

Snake Rides

There is no shortage of customizable fixed and single speed bike options available online, but most are meant for the US market. Snake Rides is a German take on the same idea, allowing consumers to pick and choose colors and basic parts configurations through a web interface. The parts chooser interface from Snake Rides is a bit nicer than some others out there and it seems like the bikes are higher end than similar customizable choices in the USA.
