Jakarta Governor: Too Few Cyclists in City to Justify Bike Lanes

From the Jakarta Globe:

Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo says there are not enough cyclists in the city to warrant the creation of bicycle lanes on major thoroughfares, drawing the ire of a cycling advocate and transportation expert.

In a statement on Sunday quoted on Beritajakarta.com, the administration’s official news portal, Fauzi said the growing number of cyclists still made up a negligible proportion of the city’s population.

“If there are 100,000 cyclists out of a population of 9.6 million residents, that’s not very many,” he said.

H.E.L.L. is back to Helping Everyone Live Longer

H.E.L.L is back to distributing free helmets to Boston-area cycles. Helping Everyone Live Longer started off in a dorm room back in 2007, distributed 300+ helmets and then was forced to close shop due to space constraints in the summer of 2008. Since late summer 2009 new friends have taken up the cause and continue the work to get more helmets on more heads.

Back in March 2008 we has a feature story on H.E.L.L in Urban Velo #6, What The Hell?

The Masi Guy is Moving On

It often comes as something of a shock when someone brands themselves as well as the product they represent, then moves on to a new company. But it happens, and the best are able to easily reinvent themselves.

Will we be calling Tim Jackson The ASI Guy now that he’s left Masi and joined the ranks of Breezer, Fuji and SE Bikes? It’s hard to say, but those of us who know him personally will still just call him Tim.

The Long and Triumphant History of Women in Cycling

Streetsblog.net recently posted a short story and a few linked articles relating to the historical impact of women in cycling, The Long and Triumphant History of Women in Cycling.

The scene was America in the midst of a cycling craze. Cycling conventions were affecting the way people dressed and spoke. Enthusiasts were banding together to lobby for better road conditions.

Sound familiar? It was against this background in late 1800s and the early 1900s that the Women’s Suffrage Movement took hold.

The two phenomena were not entirely distinct.

Vanmoof No. 5

The Vanmoof No. 5 may be what many people are after in a no frills commuter with everything built in. Besides the unique looks and construction, the bike houses a hardened steel ABUS developed chain lock that retracts into the frame, and front and rear built in LED lights. Even better, the LED lights are rechargeable through the built in solar panels are with via a USB port at the home or office. Full fenders and a single speed drivetrain with a coaster brake keeps it simple, low maintenance and gives it that Dutch feel. Pricing works out to about $750, with a 3-speed internal hub and roller brake front available for a bit more.
