Constructed in 1974, the Dick Lane Velodrome was inspired by a group of residents and city officials who had visited the Munich Olympics.

Ignoble Mona Backpack

Backpacks are hot, with even non-bike specific models starting to look a whole lot like the the ones we’re all familiar with from the past couple of years. The $220 Ignoble Mona backpack is one such bag with oversized pockets and a durable materials throughout. While more of a day bag than one for all day, all weather bike use I don’t see why it wouldn’t work for commuters. While some may scoff at the price, it is worth mentioning that it is made in the USA which for some is worth the extra coin and key to purchasing decisions.

Meet Stasia Burrington

Stasia Burrington (born Stasia Kato) is a Montana-based illustrator who contributed art for the article Zen and the Art of Urban Cycling in issue #23.

In 2004 she collaborated on the illustrated book The Virgin Project, and recently illustrated the cover of Cat Melodia’s Ding Dong the Diva’s Dead. She has countless pieces of art posted to her Flickr photostream, and Stasia sells original works, some wonderful prints and more through her Etsy store.

Milwaukee Road – Now Available

The new Milwaukee Bicycles steel road frame is made in the USA by Waterford Precision Cycles. Built with True Temper Verus tubing, it’s designed for use as a geared road or cyclocross bike (up to a 700x32c tire).

Frames start at just over $600. Available through Ben’s Cycle.

Surly Long Haul Trucker Deluxe

The Surly Long Haul Trucker Deluxe is going to be one of this season’s hardest to get framesets, simply because at the price there is nothing that even comes close. Basically a stock 26″ wheeled Long Haul Trucker with factory installed S+S Couplers, the Deluxe is meant for the world traveler, flying somewhere to ride across the whatever land is in front of them. 26″ wheels make for a sturdy build, and unlike 700c you can find a 26″ tire and tube just about anywhere in the world. And 26″ wheels are way easier to fit in an airline legal case without having to remove the tires, leaving more room for fenders and racks. I have a ten year old Surly Crosscheck with a set of S+S couplers retrofit in it for airline travel myself, and have done a bit of light touring and beyond with it, and have seen some very abused, coupled bikes out there going strong. Expect to pay about $1000 for it, and you’ll have to wait until spring 2011 so you have some time to save the pennies.

Bicycling Science

Bicycling Science is one of those books that really should be on the shelf of any real bike nerd, full of more equations and notations than more than a few could ever hope to completely wrap their minds around. That’s not to say this isn’t a readable book, more that most people will find themselves skipping through the parts heavy on math and sticking around more for the history and the thorough explanations of what makes bikes work as some of the most efficient machines ever. From the dawn of wheeled machines on through the particular efficiencies involved in a drivetrain the book is one part of a thorough understanding of the modern bicycle. Highly recommended, make sure you pick up the pictured 3rd edition, as I am to understand there are some significant changes from the commonly seen at swaps 2nd edition. This one is usually on my desk as reference these days—that picture is life at deadline and not a setup.

Blackburn Air Tower HP Pump Head

Just about a week ago we posted about the Topeak Brass Super Air replacement pump head, and how it’s been out of production for a couple of years now. A customer service rep over at Blackburn saw the post and sent in a similar replacement head, the pictured one from their top of the line Blackburn Air Tower HP. The all aluminum head is presta specific with no levers to break off, a bleed valve and a small nub for your finger for easy one handed operation. Just push it on, pull it off—be gentle and don’t rip the valve stem off. Available for about $15, it’ll fit most floor pump hoses on the market if my collection of busted ones in the basement is any sign.

Are NYC Bike Lanes Working?

Seems like every week or so now there’s a story in the New York Times either heralding how wonderful bike lanes are, or making out bike lanes as the end of American city life as we know it. Here’s another point of view and discussion via the Room for Debate section’s, Are New York’s Bike Lanes Working?

Interview with Joe Breeze

Joe Breeze’s ideas about bicycles have had a wide reaching influence. As one of the founders of what became the modern mountain bike scene, he’s influenced a lot of people to pick up a bicycle. His focus in recent years has moved much more towards transportation bikes, and the resurrection of the Breezer Bikes brand. BikeCommuters.com recently featured an interview with Joe Breeze where he covers a bit of it all.
