San Jose city council members are expected to end the city’s bicycle licensing program. The move comes after a city audit released earlier this year found a low participation rate and the program doesn’t raise enough money to cover the cost of maintaining a licensing database.
Although I’m not really sure why Harlot named these socks “Einstein” they are quite brilliant. Essentially, they asked Sock Guy to make them some extra, extra tall wool socks.
Extending a good 12″ above the cuff, these socks are perfect for late-fall cycling, especially when you haven’t quite converted to wearing full-length tights yet. I’m sure they’ll be handy in the winter and early spring, as well.
Lately, I’ve been wearing them with my regular year-round cycling knickers, which provides total wind protection, yet plenty of ventilation for the hill climb home.
The Einstein socks are available in S/M and L/XL and retail for $18 per pair. Visit www.harlotwear.com for more info.
When Louisville chef Ian Richie lost his job, he didn’t take it lying down. He got back in the kitchen, then out on his bike, delivering gourmet soups like vegan potato n’ greens, bissara and fish, shrimp and rice paella.
Unfortunately, on November 20th Ian was hit from behind at a red light, so although he didn’t sustain any life-threatening injuries, he’ll be out of commission for at least another week or so.

The Light & Motion Vis 180° Tail Light is perhaps the best tail light I’ve used to date. With a whopping 35 lumen output, a USB rechargeable lithium ion battery, and a clever mounting system, it’s not impossible to justify the relatively high price.
For me, the Vis 180° was especially appealing because of my particular commuting situation. Although I live in the City of Pittsburgh, I work nearly 10 miles away and some of my favorite routes are on roads where automobile traffic exceeds 40mph, and street lights are few and far between.

Congratulations to Urban Velo contributor Steevo Cummings for winning his 7th consecutive Dirty Dozen. Check out these photos by Chuck Kozara, many of which were shot on Canton Avenue, arguably the world’s steepest street.
It’s in Estonian, so I doubt many people will understand it… But it’s a music video with bikes, and people love music videos with bikes.
The 5th Annual Supermarket Street Sweep is happening on December 4th at the corner of Folsom and Embarcadero in San Francisco. Enter the cargo race and try to bring home the most poundage or the speed race for a list of checkpoints and food items. Last year brought in nearly 200 racers, and 7500 lbs of food for the San Francisco Food Bank.
Seems as our friend Doug D from www.hardcourtbikepolo.com is extending his photography skills and courier work into a gig doing some video of messengers on the job for a Travel Channel project.
I don’t know what this says, but I’m guessing it’s not “Be sure to drink your Ovaltine.”
SE Bikes has created a one-off Quad Fixed frame, a one of a kind prototype fixed freestyle version of their famous Quad BMX frame. There is absolutely only one of these frames out there, and no word if it’ll make it into production for 2012.

I’ve been kicking myself for never learning Spanish, and now here’s one more reason to be bummed… I can’t read but a few words of RebelCallejeros magazine, who just released the second issue of their urban cycling magazine from Chile.
