As reported by Dave Moulton, well-known cycling advocate Edwin Gardner was killed riding his bike around 8am just over a week ago. Almost as a matter of course any more, the police have initially ruled that the driver is innocent and that Edwin ran into the side of Jeep that killed him, somehow then ended up getting run over. You can read the news report over at The Post and Courier, with the usual comments from the local geniuses advocating running over cyclists.

I’ve been using El Duke degreaser for well over a year now. Noting the relatively small size of the bottle, and knowing that it was non-toxic, at first I only used it for degreasing my hands after working on my bike. Then after a few months I realized a little goes a long way, and started trying it out on some jobs where I would otherwise use WD-40 or some nasty chemical. While El Duke doesn’t immediately seem to work as well as toxic degreasers do, it does in fact work. It just requires more patience, and sometimes a little technique. For example, you’re not going to squirt it on your chain, pedal backwards three times and have gleaming silver links. You have to soak it—probably overnight. Likewise, you can’t just sprinkle it on your chainring and expect the grime to melt away. You have to put some on a rag and use a little elbow grease. In my opinion, knowing that prolonged exposure to this non-toxic degreaser isn’t going to make a third eye grow out of my forehead makes it worth the price and the extra effort. And lets not forget that it’s better for the environment, too.

Wheelmen & Co. realize there are many bags on the market to choose from, which is why they spent more than six months designing their Minuteman Messenger. They say they wanted, “A bag that could withstand the heavy wear and tear of commuting and travel, yet visually maintain cleanness and authenticity.”
They are especially proud that they used cork fabric, which they say is, “Soft to the touch and pleasant to view, environmentally friendly and ecologically correct.”
The Minuteman’s dimensions are 13 x 8 x 11 inches, and it retails for $159. Visit www.wheelmencompany.com for more info.
