BIKE POLO TOURNAMENT – CPCV09 from Androsky Knauer on Vimeo.
This Sunday, May 31, 2009 cycling dog lovers will meet at 2:00 PM at the Tompkins Square Park Dog Run in NYC. According to a Time’s Up! press release:
Bring your dog and bicycle to the second annual Doggie Pedal Parade. We will ride our dogs in baskets and trailers, listen to doggie tunes playing on the music bike, and end at Washington Square Park for a party complete with donated tofu hot dogs, vegan cookies, other snacks and drinks for all.
Visit www.times-up.org for more info.

“Brakeless is Suicide” is a photography expo inspired by and poking fun at some of the attitudes and comments about track bikes on the street. Photographers Ines Gonzalez Cordero and Sammy Utiger produced all of the images on display at Bar du Nord in Geneva, Switzerland. The opening party is on June 11th with the exposition running through June 25th. “We are the motor, we are the brakes.”
Human Traffic x Shoe Biz SF x Onitsuka Collaboration. from Human Traffic Productions on Vimeo.
Human Traffic is proud to present an all new shoe. The shoe is a collaboration with San Francicso’s own Shoe Biz, and Onitsuka Tiger. The shoe is based on the ‘66 Mexico, which features a series of notable features as it situates itself as a reflective, all-vegan shoe for fixed gear riders. The initial look includes a mesh overlay with 3M underneath on the typically sleek ‘66 Mexico style. Stay tuned for more details on availability.
For more information on the collaborative shoe, visit ShoeBizSF.com. To learn more about Human Traffic, an upcoming film, visit HumanTrafficSF.com.
After weeks of laboring over some killer “Lights On Bikes” images—more than 300 to be precise—we have finally chosen the winners of the first Princeton Tec: Got Lights On Bikes photo contest.
The submissions were overwhelming and the quality of the images were impressive to say the least. Taking the top prize for Best Overall image was Alan from Eco Velo who won himself a new singlespeed from SE Bikes. Contest winners will receive prizes from our sponsors—SE Bikes, Crumpler, Swobo, Ergon and Princeton Tec, of course.
The Got Lights On Bikes Flickr site will continue to live, so if you’ve got a cool shot post it.
Portland Design Works set up shop this year, and among their first products are the Speed Metal Grips. The first thing you’ll notice is the copious use of anodized aluminum. With seven color choices, the Speed Metal’s are squarely in the running for “coolest looking grips, ever.”
Unfortunately, you’ll pay for those good lucks to the tune of $40 per pair. I’m not saying they’re overpriced, it’s just that from a practical standpoint they’re not really all that special. In fact, to me, the shortened rubberized area doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. I go to great lengths to cover my handlebars with cushioned bar tape or soft rubber grips, but these leave my thumb and forefinger clenched around cold hard metal.
Like most lock-on grips, you trade the convenience of secure installation and easy removal for a little more weight and less padding than traditional all-rubber grips. On the bright side, the rubber portion of the grips are replaceable, and PDW is a 1% For the Planet member. If you’re looking for something unique, and you like firm grips, these might be right up your alley.

The Rocky VII, Adrian’s Revenge is scheduled for July 18th in where else but Philadelphia PA. Based on Rocky Balboa’s famous run up the Philadelphia Museum of Art stairs, this is a two person race with a sprinter and a runner. One runs up the steps to retrieve a package, the other sprint to its destination. Repeat a few times and you’ve got a race. Visit myspace.com/rockyphiladelphia for more info.
On May 24th Dayton Ohio hosted the 6th Annual Midwest Bike Polo Champeenships, drawing 27 teams worth of players to battle it out in an all-day, double elimination bracket. We learned about the Auckland GetAcross protest from Sammo in New Zealand. He writes:
Today we took part in a protest to gain cyclist and pedestrian access to the Auckland Harbour Bridge. Attached are some photos and links to the local news site articles.
Food Gatherers, the food bank for Washtenaw County, sees a lot of generosity around the holidays at the end of the year, but the need for donations is high all year, especially now. With that in mind, Ypsi Velo decided to throw a Cranksgiving in June, the same idea, just earlier in the year.
Where: Recreation Park, Ypsilanti, MI
When: June 27, 2009, 6 – 8 pm
What: You’ll have two hours to race to local grocery stores and buy food for Food Gatherers

The Associated Press is reporting that a small bomb exploded in New York’s Times Square, smashing the window of a Starbucks coffee shop. Investigators seem to think this bombing may be related to others that have occurred during the wee hours of the night over the past four years. The article states:
In the previous bombings, a bicyclist was seen in the area prior to the explosions. No witnesses came forward immediately Monday, and police still have to see what, if any, security camera footage is available.
Urban Velo presents the 2009 4th of July Bike Polo Tournament, the morning after Pittsburgh’s Bicycle Film Festival party. It will be a friendlies round-robin tournament. Team assignments will be chosen randomly. You will play everyone at least once in an all day bracket. Consider this less than serious holiday polo fun. Bring your own picnic.
