Bike Advocacy in High Heels

heels.jpgIn Copenhagen, a city of 1.7 million, 36% of the population ride their bike to work or school each day. Copenhagen Cycle Chic hopes to inspire people in other countries to commute by bicycle, or lobby for better bike conditions. At the very least, they implore you to enjoy the view from their saddles.

What I Want For X-Mas…

Bicycle EngineWell, not really…

According to www.bicycle-engines.com, “This kit is legal in almost all states,” which is both surprising and reassuring. Unfortunately, “Operating this motorized bicycle or bicycle engine kit involves some risk of bodily injury,” seems to guarantee my untimely demise.

Now, one of these with slick tires would be pretty killer, but I’m not holding my breath…

Safety is Sexy

redhelmetsexysticker.jpg

The folks over at Safety is Sexy are looking for artists to create work based on the phrase “You’d look hotter in a helmet.” Their mission is to erase the stigma that wearing a helmet is dorky or uncool and to encourage the idea that wearing a helmet is attractive, cool and smart.

Another reason to love Bogotá…

bogota.jpg

As seen in this film, cyclists in Bogotá, Colombia have reason to rejoice every Sunday (and on holidays). The regular city-sponsored car free events bring almost two million people out to bike, skate, walk and dance in the streets.

Community Bike Cart Design

bentrailer.jpg Bike trailers are good. Anything to promote cycling as a utility solution is good as gold. Recently the author of the Community Bike Cart Design ‘zine got in touch to let us know that on his personal site you can download the most recent PDF iteration for home printing. There are also plenty of pictures and info about various cart designs that Aaron has come up with or contributed to.

The Urban Velo Store sells copies of the printed zine for a few dollars if you’re more into paper and ink. Either way, its a great resource for inspiration.

Seagull Bags – Columbus OH

bags.jpg bags2.jpg

The Columbus Ohio home of Seagull Bags served as the start/finish of this past weekend’s Columbus Bumshuffle. In between racing, eating and the afterparty we found ourselves drinking coffee and chatting with Seagull owner and founder Dan, who promptly got to work on completing some standing orders. In a show of my appreciation for the hospitality I made sure to destroy a coffee cup sculpture masterpiece. Sorry about that, Pittsburgh isn’t known for it’s grace.

While Dan has been making bags for some time, the storefront just came about in the summer of ’07 as the business expanded and hired on a few employees. In the coming weeks the shop will be closed and reworked as demand continues to rise, back and better than ever for 2008.

Life’s a Beach

infowinteraintnoalleys3-1.jpgFolks in the northern parts of the US need an excuse to escape the cold. For years they’ve been vacationing in Florida, combining a trip to grandma’s house with some wintertime fun in the sun.

The good folks in Pensacola are hip to this, and they’re extending a warm invite to their “AlleyBeachCat”. They’re promising lots of parties, lots of prizes and lots of fun. Mark your calendars for January 4-6 and visit myspace.com/pensacolaalleycatz for more info.

Advocating Advocacy

Urban Velo issue #4 featured the finale of David Hoffman’s Starting Your Own Advocacy Organization series. For your convenience, we’ve created an advocacy resources page, with links to all the advocacy articles we’ve published, and handy links to advocacy organizations.

Pedal Powered Car Pulled Over By Police

As reported on glumbert.com, an experimental four-person pedal car was pulled over by the police because it posed a safety hazard…

Obviously this opens up all sorts of questions, like when is a car a car and a bike a bike? What if your car is pedal powered? Does it really need to be registered?

Short & Angry has a website!

shortnangrylogo_final.jpgIt seems like it’s been forever since Minneapolis seamstress Maia Lund started making cycling caps. Until now, only MySpace users and Cars-R-Coffins coffee shop patrons knew about the former courier’s custom sewn creations. Now with the release of her website, that’s about to change.

Best known for her signature service, a hem and a hat, Maia will hem your pants to a cycling friendly length and create a custom cycling cap from the leftover material. Too cool. The same might be said about her logo, which was designed by none other than Urban Velo’s publisher, Jeff Guerrero.
