Our friend Matt in Portland just sent us a link to this article highlighting 16 strange and amazing bicycle concepts. Regular readers have no-doubt seen some of them on our website already, but there’s a few new ones in there that make it work a look.

I like that idea of that Bergmoench backpack bike. It’s more like an all terrain scooter than a bicycle, but I can see its uses.
The only problem: Any trail where bikes are allowed you’ll probably want to ride up. And any trail that you must hike up, bikes aren’t permitted.
None of those look like they offer any practical improvement over current bicycles.
Maybe no improvement, but they made me think. The elevated bikeway made me think how nice it would be to roof roads over with real bikeways, paid for with billboard ads walling the cars in smogtight. Ads for cars – beer – cigarettes – fast food – they’d bid big bucks for their captive audience.
The little trail bike’d be handy on a small boat cruise.
These design exercises felt like a good mind stretch.
